What is a Winter Mooring?

A winter mooring gives you a fixed berth at a marina or designated mooring site for the winter period, typically from November through March.

It allows you to:

  • Pause continuous cruising during harsh weather
  • Access on-site facilities like electric hook-ups, showers, laundry, and Wi-Fi
  • Stay safe and sheltered during high winds, flooding, and freezing temperatures
  • Connect with a boating community and enjoy social events and support

Winter moorings are ideal for those seeking stability and comfort during the colder months without committing to a long-term contract.

Weather Protection

Navigating the waterways in freezing conditions isn’t just unpleasant - it’s risky. A winter mooring lets you avoid frozen canals, icy towpaths and stormy mooring spots.

Safety and Security

Unlike towpath moorings, our marinas are secure, gated communities with CCTV, staff on-site, and controlled access - so you can rest easy.

Top Tips for a Smooth Winter Afloat

Protect Your Pipes and Water Systems

Insulate exposed pipes and water tanks, and consider using lagging or heat tape to prevent freezing. Running your taps occasionally can also help stop them from freezing solid in sub-zero temps.

Keep Warm Safely

Make sure your solid fuel stove or diesel heater is well-maintained and ventilated. Have a carbon monoxide detector onboard, and keep fuel stocked up - especially in remote areas where supplies may be limited.

Stay Dry and Condensation-Free

Winter brings damp, so invest in a dehumidifier or moisture absorbers, and ventilate regularly. Use thermal blinds and draft excluders to keep heat in and moisture out.

Stock Up and Plan Ahead

Bad weather can limit your movement, so keep essentials onboard - food, coal, gas, water, and warm clothing. It's also wise to keep your phone charged and torches handy in case of power cuts.
